Thursday 23 May
9.30am–2.30pm

This inspiring program is an unprecedented opportunity for local educators to spend the day with Brisbane-based artist Michael Cook as we take an in-depth look at his speculative photomedia practice.

Michael Cook is an internationally renowned Indigenous artist of Bidjara heritage who creates works that invite us to re-imagine the conflicted colonial history of Australia. Acclaimed projects including Majority Rule, Mother and Invasion draw upon Cook’s personal history to subtly reveal inconvenient truths and explore universal ideas of identity and belonging.

During the day, we will look at the photographic techniques that Cook uses to produce his artworks and situate his practice within the broader context of the work of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Participants will enjoy a private tour of the artist’s current exhibition at Ten Cubed.

You will also explore Monash’s growing collection of artworks by First Nations artists with MUMA’s Director Charlotte Day and discuss new opportunities for engaging students with critical historical and contemporary issues in Australian society.
